What is Yoga?
Yoga is a broad church and one of the great legacies of Indian traditions. Today, yoga has adapted to the modern lifestyle and physical requirements of the Western mind and body. Yoga techniques are practiced to reduce the effects of a sedentary working life, increase sport capability, create a fit, lithe body and rehabilitate from injury. Although the Yoga postures are effective for maintaining and even restoring one’s physical health, the true power of Yoga lies in its capacity as a path to happiness and inner freedom.
What is the goal of Yoga?
Yoga has a number of goals including physical health, mental harmony, and emotional balance. In its most integrated form, Yoga seeks to unlock our full human potential.
Do I need to be fit to start yoga?
Absolutely not. Yoga is suitable for all ages and all shapes and sizes. You learn to adapt the practice to suit your needs.
What should I wear?
You should wear loose comfortable clothing. Yoga is practised in bare feet.
Can I eat before class?
It is best to allow for at least 3/4 hours digestion time if you have had a main meal. Otherwise, if you’ve just had a light snack then give yourself at least 1 hour. If you really need to eat before then have a yoghurt of a piece of fruit or vegetable soup – anything that is easy to digest.
Do I need any equipment?
All equipment is provided. If you continue with the practice of yoga it is recommnended to purchase your own equipment. This will also help you develop a home practice.
